 7. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Historical town also spelt as Vishnupur, Bankura District, western West Bengal. Lying just south of the Dhaleshwari (Dhalkisor) river, Bishnupur was the capital of the Hindu mallabhum kingdom, which was founded in the eighth century AD and was once the most important Hindu dynasty in Bengal. The town is surrounded by old fortifications and has more than a dozen brick temples. The sixteenth century Jor Bangla and stepped Ras Mancha are excellent examples of brick temples of the Bengali style. The Dhrupad school of Indian music was founded (sixteenth – seventeenth century) here under royal patronage. Bishnupur was constituted a municipality in 1863 and has several colleges affiliated with the University of Nurdwan. It has major Grand Trunk Road and rail connections and is an agricultural trade and silk-weaving centre. Population (2001) – 61, 947.

No such proposal of permanent court building from rented house is pending for the Judgeship of Bankura. All the court buildings of Bankura Sadar Sub-division, Bishnupur Sub-Division and Khatra Sub-Division are functioning on their own court buildings.
